If Words Were Colors, a one-of-one NYFW SS27 runway look by RICHOUTHEBOX

One-of-One Clothing: How to Buy, Wear and Care for 1/1 Pieces

"One of one" gets used a lot in streetwear. At RICHOUTHEBOX it means exactly what it says: a garment that was made once, by hand, and will never be remade. Here's what to know before you buy a 1/1 piece — and how to keep it looking the way it did on the runway.

What makes a piece truly one of one?

  • It can't be reproduced. Hand-dyeing, spray-painting and hand-cut appliqué create results that can't be repeated exactly.
  • It's documented. Our NYFW SS27 runway pieces come with a certificate of authenticity.
  • It has a story. Every look has a name and a meaning — from Fronto to Flow of Love.

How to buy a 1/1 piece

Check measurements, not just size. Runway pieces are built on specific bodies, so we list garment details on each product page. If you're unsure, ask the studio before you buy.

Buy the piece, not just the look. Many of our runway looks can be purchased as separates — a jacket or pants on their own — so you can build the piece into your existing wardrobe.

Don't wait. There's no restock. When a 1/1 sells, it's archived.

How to wear it

Let the piece lead. Pair a hand-painted jacket with simple denim or black trousers; let a statement pant sit under a plain tee. One-of-one clothing looks most intentional when everything around it is quiet.

How to care for hand-painted and upcycled denim

  • Wash rarely. Spot-clean first. Denim and painted finishes last longest with minimal washing.
  • When you must wash: turn the garment inside out, use cold water and a gentle detergent, and choose a delicate cycle — or hand-wash. Follow any care note on the product page; some pieces are dry clean only.
  • Never tumble dry. Heat can crack paint and shrink denim. Hang or lay flat to dry.
  • Skip the iron on painted areas. If needed, iron inside out on low heat with a pressing cloth.
  • Store with space. Hang jackets on wide hangers and avoid folding along painted panels.
  • Keep the certificate. It's part of the piece's provenance.

Why 1/1 is the future of sustainable fashion

Making one garment at a time from upcycled materials means nothing is overproduced. Read more in Why We Upcycle.
