Vegan Leather vs. Leather: What to Know Before You Buy a Bag
Share
"Vegan leather" can mean many things, and "luxury" doesn't automatically mean animal leather. If you're deciding between the two for your next bag, here's a clear, honest breakdown — including what we use for the GOODIE BAG and why.
What is vegan leather?
Vegan leather is any leather-look material made without animal hide. The most common type is PU (polyurethane): a polyurethane coating bonded to a fabric backing, then embossed with a grain or texture. Other alternatives include plant-based materials made from sources such as cactus, apple waste or mushroom mycelium. The GOODIE BAG uses PU vegan leather embossed with a crocodile texture.
How they compare
- Look: modern PU can be embossed with almost any texture, from crocodile to snakeskin, with consistent color. Animal leather has natural variation from hide to hide.
- Weight: PU is typically lighter, which matters for a bag you carry all day or take on a flight.
- Water resistance: PU sheds light rain and spills well. Untreated animal leather can spot or stain.
- Aging: animal leather develops a patina over time. PU keeps its original look but, after years of heavy use, can show wear at stress points.
- Animal welfare: vegan leather contains no animal hide.
- Price: PU is generally less expensive to produce, so design, construction and finishing play a bigger role in its value.
What makes a vegan leather bag feel luxury?
Material is only one part of the story. Structure, hardware, lining, stitching and handwork are what separate a forgettable bag from one you keep for years. That's why each GOODIE BAG is finished by hand — stenciled or painted individually — and why our limited editions are numbered. Read more in What Makes a Bag Luxury?
How to care for a vegan leather bag
- Wipe the surface with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap; dry with a clean towel.
- Avoid harsh solvents, alcohol and abrasive cleaners, which can damage the coating.
- Keep it away from direct heat sources such as radiators and car dashboards in summer.
- Store it stuffed with tissue or a towel so it keeps its shape, ideally in a dust bag.
- Don't overload the straps — distribute weight in the main compartment.
- For hand-painted details, avoid scrubbing painted areas.
The bottom line
Choose animal leather if patina and natural variation matter most to you. Choose vegan leather if you want a lighter, water-resistant, animal-free bag with bold textures and color. Either way, buy the bag that's designed and finished with care — that's what lasts.
