What to Wear to New York Fashion Week: A Street-Style Guide

New York Fashion Week is equal parts runway and sidewalk. The shows last minutes; the street style lasts all day. Having shown our own collections in New York, here's our guide to what to wear to NYFW — whether you're attending, shooting or just soaking it in.

1. Wear one statement, not five

The most photographed people at fashion week usually commit to one idea. A hand-painted jacket, a bold bag or a sculptural piece — then everything else supports it. If you're wearing a one-of-one, like a look from our NYFW SS27 collection, keep the rest of the outfit simple.

2. Dress for a full day

Shows run across the city, often back to back. Choose shoes you can actually walk in and layers you can remove. Wide-leg trousers, a strong jacket and a tee underneath will take you from a morning presentation to an evening afterparty.

3. Carry everything in one great bag

Between invitations, chargers, a water bottle and an extra layer, you'll carry more than you think. A structured duffle like the GOODIE BAG holds it all and still reads as part of the outfit. Going lighter? The Mini GOODIE BAG is built for evenings. More ideas in How to Style a Duffle Bag.

4. Play with tailoring

Fashion week is the perfect place to break formal rules. A statement tie over a plain tee, or a cropped button-up with wide-leg denim, signals that you know the codes — and chose to rewrite them. Try the Tie Negative button-up or a Patchwork Denim Tie.

5. Wear something with a story

Photographers and editors notice pieces that mean something. Upcycled denim, hand-finished details and independent designers will always stand out more than the logo everyone else is wearing.

6. Respect the weather

September in New York can swing from humid to cool in a day; February is properly cold. Plan for both: a layer you can tie around your waist in September, and a coat that's part of the look in February.

Quick checklist

  • One statement piece
  • Comfortable, polished shoes
  • A bag that holds a full day
  • A removable layer
  • Phone charger and invitations
